It seems that everywhere we look as a pro-rights organization, we see and hear people talking about ‘common sense’ and ‘compromise’. Unfortunately, the things that are proposed as ‘common sense’ are often totalitarian edicts that will result in the loss of life and property and the ‘compromise’ consists of anti-rights activists demanding those edicts and then stating that we are unreasonable when we don’t agree with them.

In the interest of ‘common sense’ and compromise, Connecticut Carry proposes that the legislators instead work towards a bill to completely open our Connecticut state background check system and provide instant access to it for free via the internet and possibly via smart phone applications as well. In working towards this goal, Connecticut Carry would be happy to assist, since we have experience in providing a Conviction History Search service to our members through our website.

Legislators should also work to get the Federal background check system opened to the public and available instantly online. Already the AIFIS system that the Connecticut State Police use for national background checks is automated and returns results in less than 2 hours. There is no reason the NICS couldn’t be opened to the public with near-instant results via handheld devices for free.

This would go a long way towards more background checks in our state and in our country as people would surely appreciate a free and easy way to check the criminal status of people trying to buy a firearm privately from them. No gun owner wants to sell to a prohibited person. Why not give them the tools to make sure they do not since we already have Federal criminal penalties that apply if they do sell to a criminal?

This is a real change that our legislators could be working towards instead of insulting the hundreds of thousands of responsible gun owners in Connecticut with ridiculous bill proposals that seek to ban the majority of firearms and firearms accessories in private hands.

On January 19^th, at least 1500 gun owners braved the bitter cold and gathered on the steps of the state capital demanding an end to the onslaught of bills that seek to make them further victims of a madman. Speakers spoke of rights, of being victims and pledged to never be victims again. The event was marked by a huge amount of passion, but was completely peaceful and uneventful. The capital police made remarks about how they did not need to police the pro-rights people at the event, only the handful of anti-rights activists who continually tried to stir up trouble and were ignored by the participants until they were escorted from the event by the capital police.

On January 28^th, gun owners made a record show of force inside the Legislative Office Building, once again braving bitter cold temperatures, snowy roads and taking time off of their work. This time, somewhere over 2000 gun owners piled into the legislative office building creating ridiculously long lines at metal detectors meant to slow and discourage their arrival. They packed at least 5 large hearing rooms including the largest hearing room in the Legislative Office Building which served as the main hearing room.

Thunderous applause followed pro-rights testimony; as sure a sign of the probable 100:1 ratio of pro-rights to anti-rights supporters as the sea of bright yellow “Another Responsible Gun Owner” stickers that Coalition of Connecticut Sportsmen handed out. They brought 1,100 stickers and ran out. The stickers became a hot commodity as they were in such spectacular demand. MSNBC and other media outlets tried to smear the pro-rights supporters that attended by accusing them of ‘heckling’ the father of a Newtown victim. MSNBC went so far as to drastically edit the video for that effect. They have been called out on this, and the president of MSNBC, Steve Capus is now resigning amid this scandal, the fifth of such scandals that MSNBC has perpetrated and has been found guilty of.

During the hearing, many pro-rights supporters were shocked and offended that Senator Beth Bye was ignoring testimony to use social media that included mocking and complaining of the pro-rights people testifying and even going so far to ‘participate’ through Twitter in a ‘drinking game’ that sought to mock the people she is supposed to represent.

Perhaps Senator Bye should follow in Mr. Capus’ footsteps and step down from her position since she so clearly does not take her responsibilities seriously?

Throughout all of this, the pro-rights side has been hearing rumors, and it now seems confirmed that the legislature is planning to use ‘Emergency Certification’ to bypass public hearings and to railroad hundreds of thousands of gun owners in Connecticut and make many of them into instant felons while potentially confiscating their personal property.

This is simply unacceptable and immoral.

The legislative committees and anti-rights legislators keep pretending to represent the people while clearly ignoring and mocking the people of Connecticut in not-so-subtle manners. They have overstepped their bounds in the proposal of ridiculous and unconstitutional bills which have further insulted the pro-rights side and made compromise next to impossible.

They claim to be doing the ‘will of the majority’ and listening to ‘the people’, while ignoring the obvious 100:1 pro-rights to anti-rights ratio that exists in this state. They also clearly ignore the fact that mob rule (or small, vocal minority rule) does not give them the power to circumvent due legislative process and people’s constitutional rights.

If we thought mob rule was a reasonable way to govern though, the Courant’s recent online poll showed that only 5.6% of the people polled favored the current legislative proposals out of a total 1941 responses. The anti-rights supporters and legislators continue to be a radical fringe element in our society.

We must demand that the people be heard on every bill proposed and that the legislature give us our due legislative process. This issue is too important and too divisive to ram down people’s throats through heavy handed edicts.

After all, being heard is the true will of the people.

Connecticut Carry was proud to attend and speak at the hearing of the Bipartisan Task Force on Gun Violence Prevention and Children’s Safety. We joined at least 1000 other fellow pro-rights activists and gun owners who braved cold weather, long lines, public speaking and an all day wait to have our voices heard.

The great work of our members utilizing kind and respectful debating and sharing intelligent and articulate thoughts and ideas is sure to leave an impression on everyone in attendance. We can only hope that the legislators in attendance will respect and honor the vast amount of public opinion they received today.

Good spirits and patience ruled the day despite the treatment of our kind as second class citizens. Lines of good people wrapped around the building waiting to be screened by the metal detectors installed because of some ridiculous and misplaced apparent fear of peaceful gun owners.

The hypocrisy of the metal detectors and armed guards was not lost on most in attendance who noted that the same provisions are not available for schools across the state despite both the LOB and schools having the same designations as ‘Gun Free Zones’.

Would it be acceptable to treat any other generalized group of people this way?

If our legislators are important enough to protect with their own armed police force and metal detectors, why have so many legislators mocked the idea of doing the same in our schools? Why have they not embraced the National Rifle Association’s offer to fund and arrange training for such changes?

Senator Ed Meyer reported to a crowd in a church in Guilford at an anti-rights rally and again in Branford at a similar anti-rights rally that he had looked into the cost of such security, but had concluded that it was cheaper to ban guns instead. Would Senator Meyer or the other legislators agree with reassigning the Capitol Police to guard those schools?

Connecticut Carry attended the Guns Across America rally in Hartford on 1/19/2012 along with at least a thousand other pro-gun Connecticut residents. It was encouraging to see people come out and show their support for gun rights as well as their opposition to the new proposed gun control bills. The rally was organized by individuals through a Facebook page and other social media formats. With this example of what may be accomplished through a simple Facebook page and grassroots activism, there is a lot of hope for the efforts of Connecticut’s state level organizations throughout this legislative session.

The media was also in attendance. Although the legislators were away enjoying their weekends, one of the Senators stopped by.  Senator Bye stood in the back of the crowd looking uninterested and rolling her eyes at some of the speakers and the cheering crowds when she wasn’t staring down into her phone. Our hope is that at least a little of the spirit and some of the message sank in with Senator Bye. Senator Bye is the proponent of two bills “To require firearm owners to maintain liability insurance and establish a sales tax on the sale of ammunition at a rate of fifty per cent” (HB-5268 & SB-140 ). Such bigotry is shocking, but seems to be the norm with our current legislators.

Connecticut Carry urges our members and Connecticut residents to keep the momentum rolling. Don’t stop now by assuming that a rally was enough to defeat the proposed bills. It is still as important as ever to write to your legislators in opposition to these laws. It is extremely important to attend the public hearings at the Legislative Office Building and testify, whether you do so orally in person or by submitting written testimony.

Connecticut Carry was on site in Weston at the Board of Selectmen meeting with volunteers in a standing-room-only middle school cafeteria with approximately 200 people. Connecticut Carry spent most of the meeting talking to residents and local police about their concerns and questions related to the proposed ban. The Weston Police Department once again showed remarkable resolve and grace in the face of an ordinance that would be downright ridiculous for them to try and enforce.

Literature disappeared as quickly as it could be distributed and Weston residents once again came fully armed with their own knowledge and research about the facts surrounding their town’s proposed gun ban. It is difficult to tell if the reams of information we distributed at the police commissioner’s meeting helped, but it certainly felt like it.

Town residents made it clear that the select people had overstepped their bounds and had brought needless negative national attention and potential legal liability to their small town. Residents uniformly rejected the proposed tyranny of the Board of Selectmen and instead offered solid suggestions to put armed security in the schools and to look into changes to mental health care instead.

A small group of extreme anti-rights activists from the CSGV-spawned ‘March for Change’ would occasionally speak up with their typical inflammatory talking points about removing civil rights from the town of Weston so that they could send their children to a stranger’s house unsupervised with no parental responsibility. These arguments were met with limited and sporadic applause from even their own activists.

Meanwhile, the residents of Weston that stood their ground and defended their rights were met with large amounts of applause and even shouts of encouragement. There was a real feeling of community amongst the Weston residents present and everyone was courteous and polite.

During the meeting it became clear that the Board of Selectmen had retreated from their ridiculous gun ban ordinance and gone back to discussing clarifications to their 1990 unlawful discharge ordinance. The Board of Selectmen cited a huge outpouring of resistance to their plans from across the state and from across the country as reasons why they had reconsidered their stances.

Connecticut Carry will continue to monitor the ongoing discussions, work closely with residents and the police department and educate and inform those involved as to what is legally acceptable and to advocate on behalf of the residents of Weston.

We are excited to see that the residents of Weston have backed their Board of Selectmen down. They all deserve a pat on the back for having such resolve. This isn’t completely over yet, but they have sure come a long way!

Senator Ed Meyer hosted an anti-gun rally disguised as a ‘gun violence forum’ at the First Congregational Church in Guilford Connecticut. The rally started with a representative of the church’s ‘peace committee’ citing information that was blatantly false such as:

·         It is constitutional to ban firearms.

·         The Second Amendment is about militias and therefore does not apply to individuals.

·         America is somehow more violent than other countries.

·         Modern sporting rifles are a main culprit of the violent crime.

·         Violence is on the rise in America.

These anti-rights talking points are clearly false and have been disproven in such works as “More Guns, Less Crime” by John Lott, and by simply looking at FBI crime data which is released annually and is freely available to the public on their website. Violent crime has been on a steady decline for decades, regardless of the sales of these types of firearms and the overwhelming spread of more lenient laws that allow more citizens across the nation to carry firearms in public. The Federal Assault Weapons Ban of 1994 did nothing to change crime statistics or provide for public safety, nor did it prevent such heinous acts as the Columbine massacre or the North Hollywood shootout, although it did hinder the response to the North Hollywood incident.

Senator Meyer went on to tell people erroneously that his bill won’t affect most of them and that there have been no cases of self defense with a firearm in Connecticut. Senator Meyer had no sufficient answer for the gentlemen from Madison who stood up and recounted his experience as a child when a violent criminal tried to break into his home and his sister protected him with a semi-automatic shotgun without needing to fire a single shot, thankfully. Senator Meyer did not want to hear from Connecticut Carry President Rich Burgess about the estimated 1.5 – 2.5 million uses of firearms in self defense each year. The NRA keeps an archive of such stories on their ‘Armed Citizen’ website. Indeed, there are 82 such incidents in Connecticut alone, and this is likely a tiny portion of the actual events.

Senator Ed Meyer would not call on Connecticut Carry Rich Burgess who was ready and willing to ask why Senator Meyer would bother with such a bill when the DC v Heller case(s) so clearly outlined that it would be unconstitutional to ban guns in ‘common use’ like all of the guns Senator Meyer proposes to ban. The Supreme Court also ruled that citizens could not be required by law to store their firearms where they would be inaccessible to them. Senator Meyer claims to have consulted with an attorney about these issues but obviously did not consult with an appropriate attorney that understood our current legal landscape.

Senator Meyer then went on to introduce a guest he had invited, Retired Police Officer Pat Leary, who pulled out a facsimile of an AR 15, which he identified as a ‘BB gun’ and stated it was ‘not loaded’. He then proceeded to wave it around the room as he described why he thought the laws should be changed to ban that type of firearm.

Connecticut Carry President Rich Burgess contacted the Guilford Police Department about the incident and described that this is a clear violation of Connecticut General Statute Sec. 53-206.” Carrying of dangerous weapons prohibited”. The situation is under investigation by the Guilford Police Department. Retired Officer Pat Leary demonstrated another thing: How archaic and completely ridiculous our laws in this state are and how most police officers do not know or understand those laws.

Senator Ed Meyer also came out of the church carrying the same BB gun and admitted to not knowing the law. We expect the Guilford Police Department will also investigate his actions, as they confirmed in front of us that the church did not have knowledge of this dangerous and unlawful stunt.

Connecticut Carry was on hand with a core group of volunteers in a packed meeting room to witness the police commission of Weston table a discussion on a proposed gun ban. According to the police commission, they feel it is too early to discuss such a ban since the first draft of the ordinance is being rewritten after being found to be too restrictive and the selectmen were unable to produce the copy of the ordinance to get proper input from the commission.

Connecticut Carry shares in and supports the commission’s decision to wait for a real ordinance to be discussed. This should also allow some hysteria to pass and for cooler minds prevail. We found very little support for the proposed ban in the crowded meeting hall as First Selectwoman Gayle Weinstein vigorously tried to push the old draft of the ordinance in front of the commission, trying to get them to comment on an ordinance revision that has no chance of passing and is full of constitutional pitfalls that will end up bankrupting the town through ensuing litigation.

Connecticut Carry spent much of the meeting passing out talking points and factual references to help educate the crowd and the officials as to the problems with the ordinance. The literature was well received and was immediately used by residents to question the legitimacy of the ordinance and the motivations of the selectmen.

The town of Weston has our full support and attention in getting this ordinance shelved for good as that is the only appropriate outcome for such a silly, dangerous, reckless and hysterical ordinance that the First Selectwoman and Selectmen seek to inflict upon the residents of Weston.

Whether we like it or not, Connecticut has become the battleground state for gun rights following the terrible tragedy that befell the Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut. Politicians and people with political agendas all over the state and from all over the country wasted no time in attacking the rights of the 3 million citizens of Connecticut as well as citizens across the nation over the actions of a lone, evil madman.

Connecticut Carry was on hand at Saint John’s Episcopal Church in West Hartford where U.S. Representative John Larson attempted to stir anti-gun hysteria in the wake of the Sandy Hook Elementary School tragedy.

Congressman Larson wasted no time in attacking his political agenda by giving a speech about ‘all of his solutions’ to tragedies like the one that occurred in Newtown, but instead spent the entire speech ranting and raving about ‘assault weapons’, ‘assault rifles’, ‘automatic weapons’, ‘high capacity clips’, and ‘background checks’. Congressman Larson apparently didn’t think anyone present would recognize the talking points of the radical anti-rights organizations like the Brady Campaign, The Violence Policy Center and the CSGV. These organizations have spent a great deal of time and energy trying to confuse otherwise ignorant people into believing that the modern sporting rifles to which they apply the label ‘assault weapon’ are somehow more deadly than any other type of weapon. They purposely confuse people about the differences between semi-automatic firearms and fully-automatic firearms.

Congressman Larson conflated the terms above to try and make his constituents believe that he was trying to ban from civilian ownership the automatic weapons that the military utilizes.

Congressman Larson repeated the same line telling his constituents over and over that over 3 million people in the United States possessed ‘a Bushmaster’. He then went on to say that ‘something must be done’. What Congressman Larson did not bother to mention was that (assuming his numbers are true), that means that 2,999,999 owners of ‘Bushmasters’ did not massacre anyone on December 14^th. Further, he could have mentioned that ‘Bushmaster’ is one company that manufactures the style firearm he is referring to and that the number is much, much larger. Any conservative estimate of gun owners in America would draw numbers in excess of 100 million people. That is 999,999,999 people that didn’t go on a murder spree that day that he wants to punish. Out of those people, conservatively, 4,000 people likely used their firearms in defense of themselves or their property that day as Article 1, Section 15 of our state constitution demands.

When asked if Congressman Larson would seek a quick and complete ban of guns like the gun confiscation in Australia, he replied that he would be in favor of this. He also agreed with a young man that urged him to urge President Obama to act through executive order on banning and confiscating firearms like they did in Australia after he acted through executive order on the ‘fiscal cliff’.

Congressman Larson should probably learn about the ideas that he is proselytizing, because Australia has seen a steady rise in violent crime since their gun ban and buyback programs from 1996.

In 2002 — five years after enacting its gun ban — the Australian Bureau of Criminology acknowledged there is no correlation between gun control and the use of firearms in violent crime. In fact, the percent of murders committed with a firearm was the highest it had ever been in 2006 (16.3 percent), says the D.C. Examiner.

Even Australia’s Bureau of Crime Statistics and Research acknowledges that the gun ban had no significant impact on the amount of gun-involved crime:

In 2006, assault rose 49.2 percent and robbery 6.2 percent.
Sexual assault — Australia’s equivalent term for rape — increased 29.9 percent.
Overall, Australia’s violent crime rate rose 42.2 percent.

If Congressman Larson says he is on the side of ‘reducing violence’ than he is sure taking the wrong road.

Congressman Larson’s plan is to make us more like Norway, home of some of the toughest gun laws in the world. There a madman used guns and bombs to wage war for hours against a completely unarmed populace completely unable to defend themselves. This resulted in 77 people dead and 319 injured. Many of these victims were children. If we could learn anything from that tragedy, it is that an unarmed populace gets innocent people killed.

There is another startling revelation in Congressman Larson’s preaching. Congressman Larson wishes President Obama would circumvent the legislature and utilize executive orders to ban private property. This is a clear violation to the constitution and to the representative republic we have here. The very suggestion is offensive on many core levels.

 Congressman Larson also stated his support for ammunition taxes and bans on ‘Saturday Night Specials’. Both of these types of laws, historically, have roots in trying to keep people of lesser means from being able to defend themselves. This is a vile concept. The people with the least means have the most need to be able to defend themselves and their loved ones. Both criminals and people with greater wealth will hardly be affected by either of these kinds of laws.

All the while, Congressman Larson continued to comment on the large crowd that had showed up to discuss his anti-gun agenda, but failed to acknowledge that a significant portion of those people were there to criticize that agenda. The crowd engaged in booing and shouting down many of the people who had the courage to stand up and question the hysteria that the Congressman was trying to stir up with the crowd. With all the talk of the ‘reasoned discourse’ and ‘common sense legislation’ that the Congressman kept mentioning, he did nothing when a man was loudly and violently yelled at by one of his constituents for having the courage to assert that an ‘Assault Weapon Ban’ would not be a valid solution to what had happened in Newtown.

Congressman Larson repeatedly told his constituents that the “NRA did not come” and yet he had numerous NRA members and representatives of state organizations like Connecticut Carry that he did not invite to this forum and quickly dismissed in entirety. Congressman Larson is right. The NRA did not come. Nor should they. The membership of the NRA hasn’t massacred any students and has no responsibility to engage Congressman Larson’s hysterical cries to ‘do something’. But state organizations like Connecticut Carry do not have a choice. We are under attack by Congressman Larson and others with political agendas.

If Congressman Larson wants to engage ‘the other side’ like he so vehemently talks about, we left him our contact information. He should get in touch with us and learn why the terms he is using are so offensive to the over 100 million citizens of the United States that he will impact with his witch hunt.

When Connecticut Carry President Rich Burgess called Congressman Larson out for his manipulations of the truth and his intent to stir hysteria, the Congressman tried to retreat and assert that he had simply ‘confused his nomenclature’. We know the truth however. The Congressman then followed Burgess’ corrections by trailing off that he would ‘get the numbers and get back to us’. We invite the Congressman to do so; we are sure that he will be surprised to find out how little he knows about any of the issues he proselytized at this forum.

Connecticut Carry Director Ed Peruta will be taking part in a one hour live panel discussion hosted by Connecticut Public Television (CPTV) and WNPR regarding guns in America. Live calls from viewers will be addressed by the panelists.

The panel will take place on Thursday, December 20^th between 8 - 9pm.
